CWU – The New Generation of Flight Jackets
As previously noted in earlier blogs, in 1972, the CWU series was introduced as a replacement for the MA-1 and L-2B, and since then, it has remained the standard flight jacket of the U.S. military, still in use today.
Originally, this line was designated CWFS (Cold Weather Flyer’s System) and was applied to U.S. military-issued models between 1972 and 1976. It wasn't until 1977 that the official nomenclature CWU (Cold Weather Uniform) was adopted.
A significant innovation was the adoption of flame-resistant Nomex® (a meta-aramid fiber), developed for superior thermal protection. This material gave the CWU jackets remarkable heat resistance and durability, which led to their adoption not only by the U.S. Air Forces but also by various European Air Forces.
Notable contractors for CWU jacket production included Greenbrier Industries, Lancer Clothing, and AVIREX, among others.
当初、このジャケットはCWFS(Cold Weather Flyer’s System)と呼ばれ、1972年から1976年までの米軍支給モデルに適用されていました。1977年になり、正式な名称としてCWU(Cold Weather Uniform)が採用されました。
For this section, A:S will introduce only the earliest—and also the rarest—models of the CWU-45/P, those manufactured in the 1970s.
CWU-45/P - Specifications and Notable Contractors:
MIL-J-83388 (1972): Contractor Unknown
MIL-J-83388A (Sep 5, 1973 – 1979): Greenbrier Industries,...
MIL-J-83388B (1980–1981): Greenbrier Industries, Lancer Clothing,...
The reason 1970s CWU jackets are considered highly valuable is that their design differs significantly from post-1980 models.
MIL-J-83388A(1973年9月5日–1979年):Greenbrier Industries,...
MIL-J-83388B(1980–1981年):Greenbrier Industries、Lancer Clothing,...
The CWU-45/P and CWU-36/P shared a standardized design:
Both featured two large front Flapped-Patch pockets in place of the snap-button pockets seen on the MA-1 and L-2B.
The ribbed knit collar was replaced with a fold-down collar.
The contrasting orange rescue lining of earlier jackets was abandoned in favor of a monochromatic lining that matched the Nomex shell.
Zipper hardware varied across production runs: Serval and Scovill were prevalent in the 1970s, while YKK became standard from the 1980s onward.
On CWU-45/P, the wind flap was cut in a square shape in the 1970s models. After 1981, this detail was changed, with the corners cut diagonally.
On the back, they featured Action Pleats (expansion folds) that allowed greater mobility of the arms and shoulders. However, these pleats were eliminated in 1981 due to the risk of snagging on cockpit equipment. As a result, the third specification (MIL-J-83388B) actually existed in two different design variations under the same specification.
In the first and second versions, the interior of the jacket contained a small removable Velcro-secured pocket designed to store a orange rescue panel. Surviving jackets that still retain this pocket are exceedingly rare today, and this detail is found only on the very first iterations.
Since 1981, the CWU design has remained largely unchanged, most commonly produced in Sage Green. In the early 2000s, however, a TAN color variant was introduced for desert operations, adapted to the combat environments of the Middle East.
Specifications and Representative Contractors (CWU-36/P):
MIL-J-83382 (1972): Contractor Unknown
MIL-J-83382A (1977): Centre MFG,...
MIL-J-83382B (1979): Centre MFG,...
The design of the CWU-36/P was essentially the same as the 45/P, but with a lighter and thinner construction to suit warmer climates. Therefore, A:S will not go into further detail here.
