MA-1 Bomber Flight Jacket - Revisiting the Story
From records and information from various foreign forums and magazines, the MA-1 flight jacket was developed as the successor to its predecessor, the B-15 series. The first MA-1 models were developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s for U.S. Air Force pilots.
Superior Togs, Lion Uniform, Rolen Sportswear, and Blue Anchor Overall are believed to be among the first companies involved in producing and developing the MA-1 under the MIL-J-8279 and 8279A specifications.
Alpha Industries was also one of the companies that manufactured the MA-1 for the U.S. military around 1963 under the model 8279C.
By the 1970s, as the MA-2 replaced it and global conflicts gradually came to an end, Alpha began adapting the MA-1 into civilian life, introducing multiple colorways and variations. This inadvertently transformed a symbol of the U.S. Air Force into a fashion item that remains popular to this day.
However, to fully understand Alpha’s history, we cannot overlook the earliest companies mentioned above.
In January 1948, Robert Lane and his wife founded Superior Togs Corporation to participate in the development and production some of the most well-known flight jackets (including the B-10 and L-2) under a contract from the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1952, Superior Togs was suspended, and Lane went on to establish Rolen Sportswear to continue MA-1 production.
By 1957, Lane and his accountant (Samuel Gelber) had founded Dobbs Industries (the predecessor to Alpha Industries), but in 1959 it was suspended again, and this time Lane and his businesses were banned from signing any future contracts with the government.
On October 17, 1959, Samuel Gelber branched off and established Alpha Industries. In 1963, Alpha secured its first official contract to produce the now-famous MA-1 (8279C) that you are familiar with.
Breaking down the Details
The issued MA-1 was only produced in a single colorway — Sage Green — except for the B-15C MOD version, which came in Navy Blue. Therefore, if you ever come across MA-1 jackets in other colors (Black, Navy, Red, Purple, etc.), they are 100% commercial versions.
The issued MA-1 is usually heavy and feels solid in hand because it is constructed with four layers to provide insulation in harsh weather conditions (-10~10°C). As such, it is far from being as light as commercial versions.
The design features a total of five pockets. Two external pockets and two interior pockets are constructed as flapless snap-button style, emphasizing utility and ease of access. In addition, a small cigarette pocket is positioned on the left sleeve—an understated yet functional detail characteristic of the period.

Period 1971–1990 — Specifications: MIL-J-8279E and MIL-J-8279F. We will not focus too much on this period, as from 1972 the MA-1 received a major update and was used in parallel with the CWU-45/P jacket (also known as the MA-2).
By the 1980s, the MA-1 gradually faded from military service and entered everyday civilian life. From then on, Alpha Industries strongly pushed the commercialization of military apparel — especially the MA-1 — using lighter materials, more varied styles, and numerous designs. They also released Replica/Reproduction collections of vintage MA-1 versions.
