Original LEVI'S 507XX - the Difference between Leather Patch & Paper Patch

The Levi’s 507XX, commonly known as the Type II Trucker Jacket, is one of the shortest-lived yet most influential denim jackets in Levi’s history. Introduced in 1953 as the successor to the Type I (506XX), the 507XX remained in production for only about nine years, until 1962, before being replaced by the Type III (557XX).

One of the main challenges in authenticating a vintage 507XX lies in the existence of two major production phases: the leather patch era and the paper patch era. Relying on a single detail often leads to misidentification.

This article aims to explain the construction, technical details, and production logic of original 1950s Levi’s 507XX jackets, based on publicly available documents, archival imagery, original garments sold and exhibited by leading vintage shops in Japan and the United States, as well as hands-on experience from long-time collectors.

I. Historical Context of the 507XX

The Type II was introduced during a transitional period when Levi’s began moving toward more standardized mass production, while still retaining many handcrafted characteristics of the 1940s–1950s.

Key features include:

  • The first appearance of two flap chest pockets

  • Replacement of exposed pocket rivets with bar tacks

  • Copper rivets stamped L.V. & CO – S.F., often showing green oxidation after decades

  • Replacement of the back cinch with side adjuster buttons

  • A short, boxy silhouette with improved functionality

  • 12–13 oz selvedge denim, woven on shuttle looms

  • 100% cotton thread

  • Inconsistent workmanship between production lots

  • No strict intention to make every garment identical

However, in the early stages, Levi's did not make radical changes. Many details of Type I still existed in the early 507XX models, which is why it is necessary to divide the 507XX into two distinct phases. Therefore, imperfection is part of the “authenticity” of the original 507XX.

  • L.V. & CO – S.F.

Common points

In Japan, jackets sized 42 inches and above are often referred to as “hagi-tsuki” (ハギ付き), meaning side panels were added due to fabric shortages at the time.

Buttons

  • Button backs typically feature one- or two-digit factory codes (e.g., 17, 0, or blank)

  • Natural dull silver patina, never glossy

  • Three-digit codes (especially 555) indicate reproduction

Rivets

  • At the slit at the wrist, 507XX still has exposed copper rivets for reinforcement, similar to Type I.

  • The back of the jacket no longer has a back cinch, but still carries the spirit of Type I.

  • The rivet heads are round, aged copper, not too shiny.

II. Phase One: Leather Patch 507XX (1953 – c.1956)

This is the early Type II period and the most highly valued phase among collectors.

Leather Patch

  • Genuine cowhide featuring the Two Horse Brand motif

  • Originally light in color, darkening over time due to oxidation

When missing:

  • Stitch holes may be faint or nearly invisible

  • Denim in the patch area and around the collar becomes stiff and shrinks slightly after multiple washes.

  • Dark staining may remain from absorbed leather oils

  • Fading around the patch area is subtler than on paper patch models

The leather patch reflects Levi’s early-1950s production philosophy: durability, ruggedness, and not focusing on production costs.

Red Tab |

Around 1953–1954, Levi’s introduced their ‘double-sided’ Levi’s Red Tab. This means that the word Levi’s is written on both sides of the tab.

  • Big E was standard

  • Equal V

  • Single-sided Red Tabs existed briefly (approximately one year) and are extremely rare, likely using leftover stock from previous periods.

  • Double-sided Red Tabs with the Registered Trademark (Ⓡ) also appeared during this transitional phase

Waistband Stitching |

A critical identification point:

  • Top seam: chain stitch

  • Bottom seam: single stitch

This mixed construction indicates that Levi’s had not yet fully standardized production and was still employing techniques from the Type I era.

Pockets, Pleats, and Bar Tacks |

  • Two flap chest pockets

  • Unlike Type I, which uses rivets to secure the corners of the pockets, Type II uses bar tacks.

  • The two pleats on the front chest are held in place with square box stitches. On single-side red tab versions, the box stitches are usually yellow thread.

Bar tack characteristics:

  • Thread color: These bar tacks are typically lemon yellow.

  • After prolonged use, they fade significantly to a near-white color, giving a “silver thread” appearance without yellowing. This is characteristic of early-generation cotton thread with unstable dyes.

  • Bar tacks at the pocket corners: Short, low density, color is usually lighter than repro

Collar Stitch at the First Button |

  • Single stitch

  • Distinctive U-shaped stitch

This is a manual stitching technique, and it appears almost exclusively on 507XX leather patches. However, a few single-sided red tab versions and a few late versions of "leather patch double-sided red tab" will still have stitching extending down to the button rows below, forming an H-shaped.

➡Many misidentifications occur when paper patch standards are incorrectly applied here.

It is very difficult to counterfeit because it is a small detail that few people notice.

III. Phase Two: Paper Patch 507XX (c.1956 – 1962)

As production volume increased, Levi’s adopted more cost-effective methods suitable for industrial laundering.

Paper (Cardstock) Patch

  • Heavy cellulose-based paper, not leather

  • Initially stiff, later prone to peeling, rotting, or complete loss

  • After the patch is lost, the faded stitching around the patch area will be stronger and more visible than the leather patch.

Therefore, many 507XX paper patches are no longer present, but they still leave behind a few signs such as needle marks, fading in the area where the patch was lost, etc.

Red Tab |

The most common red tab standard when referring to “Original 507XX paper patches” is Double-sided Big E with Trademark (Ⓡ), Equal V.

Therefore, evaluating 507XX as having lost the patch just by looking at the Red Tab is not entirely accurate. You MUST also examine the details that A:S will mention below.

Waistband Stitching |

Both the top and bottom seams are chain stitches. ➡This is the standard configuration for paper patches.

  • Easy to mass produce

  • Higher durability

  • Suitable for industrial washing

➡ This is a very good detail for distinguishing between leather patches and paper patches when the patch is missing.

Pockets, Pleats, and Bar Tacks |

  • The bar tack at the corner of the pocket is thicker than the leather patch.

  • This difference is due to the fact that later-generation cotton thread has more stable dye.

Collar Stitch at the First Button |

  • No more U-shaped stitch; the stitch will look more like an H-shaped.

  • The stitching runs straight down, connecting the rows of buttons below.
