L-2 Series – MA-1 for the Summer
Q: Why is it referred to as the “cold” of summer?
A:
In the U.S. military climate classification system for flight jackets, the MA-1 is designated as Intermediate Zone, meaning it is intended for moderately cold climates (–10°C to 10°C). In contrast, the L-2 Series is designated as Light Zone, referring to warmer operational areas (10°C to 30°C). In regions where the average temperature exceeds around 10-20°C, the L-2 Series offers significantly better comfort and mobility than the heavy, heat-retentive MA-1.
Q: Could A:S explain more about the L-2 Series? Why is it called a “Series” rather than just L-2?
A:
The term Series is used because there are three distinct models within the lineage: L-2, L-2A, and L-2B. This series was developed as the next-generation Light Zone Flight Jacket, replacing the earlier A-2 jacket. Each model represents evolutionary improvements in materials, manufacturing, and functional design to meet changing U.S. Air Force requirements.
A:
A:
Q: What are the main differences between the L-2 Series and the MA-1?
A:
Weight and Insulation – Being designed for warmer climates, the L-2 Series lacks the heavy polyester batting found in the MA-1, making it significantly lighter and thinner.
Waist Adjustment Tabs – Early L-2 Series models featured distinctive waist adjustment tabs, a feature not seen on MA-1 jackets.
Epaulets and Interior Construction – Early models (up to 1964) included shoulder epaulets (a holdover from earlier uniform designs) and omitted the internal utility pocket found in later jackets.
Pocket Style – The L-2 Series used pockets with snap closure until the mid-1960s, while the MA-1 retained flapless snap-button pockets until the late 1960s.
A:
L-2 Facts you probably didn't know
In the mid-1940s, after the Type A-2 flight jacket was officially discontinued by General Henry “Hap” Arnold in 1943, plans were set in motion to design and produce a new jacket: the L-2.
At its conception, the L-2 was NOT a flight jacket but rather a multi-purpose field utility jacket, intended for ground operations. Its first recorded field trial took place on May 21, 1945, under Specification Y-3257, and the prototype was constructed of cotton fabric.
Around 1947—coinciding with the U.S. Air Force becoming an independent branch—the specification was revised to No. 3257-A, marking the transition to official flight use. This change signaled the L-2’s adoption as part of the Air Force’s Light Zone (warm climate) flight clothing system.
L-2 (1945–1950) – Specifications and Notable Contractors:
Y-3257 (1945–1948): Contractor unknown
No. 3257-A (1949): Reed Products Inc.
MIL-J-5391 (1950): American Pad & Textile Co.

FACT:
The L-2 flight jacket remains one of the LEAST DOCUMENTED items in U.S. Air Force clothing history. Its short production run has made it EXTREMELY RARE, and thus highly sought after by collectors.
It existed under two main specifications—the most common being MIL-J-5391.
Early production jackets were made of nylon,
Featured a deeper Olive Green color than the later L-2B,
And retained a leather-reinforced oxygen mask tab,
USAAF Hap Arnold Wings is printed on the left shoulder.
The next model in the L-2 Series was the L-2A. Beginning in 1951, the L-2A retained the same design as the L-2 but changed the outer shell color to Air Force Blue (introduced to symbolize the newly independent USAF).
Due to its production period lasting only one year (1951–1952), the L-2A is equally as rare as its predecessor.
L-2A (1951–1952) – Specifications and Notable Contractors:
MIL-J-5391A (1951): L.W. Foster Sportswear Co., Inc., A. Pritzker & Sons, Inc.
MIL-J-5391A (1952): Superior Togs Corporation.

FUN FACT:
The L-2 is often mistakenly believed to have entered service as a flight jacket in 1945 during the era of the U.S. Army Air Forces. In reality, it was still undergoing testing and development at that time.
Its official adoption as a flight jacket took place in 1949, just before the outbreak of the Korean War.
L-2B Facts you probably didn't know
The last development of the L-2 Series was the L-2B, a model which not only became the most widely issued but also underwent the greatest number of MIL-SPEC (Military Specification) revisions. In terms of construction and silhouette, it was the closest of the series to the MA-1 Intermediate Zone flight jacket.
As the broader design context has been covered previously, this section will focus directly on the Specifications and the Notable Contractors for each stage of production.
